 III PRESENTATIONS
Emerging Issues in Workers Compensation
This PowerPoint presentation examines three areas of emerging risk in workers compensation insurance: workers with limited English language skills and undocumented workers; latent risk associated with first responders; and reintegration of returning veterans to the workforce. Limited English workers are shown to have high incidence rates of occupation injuries and fatalities. The impacts are especially pronounced among Latino workers. The presentation continues with an analysis of first responders to major catastrophes, which shows that “traditional” injuries (such as musculoskeletal injuries) are accompanied by high frequencies of serious respiratory ailments, oftentimes manifesting themselves years after the event (the experience of first responders to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack is used as an example). The final section of the presentation examines the issue of return-to-work for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Detailed information on physical and psychological injuries is presented along with the obligations of employers.

The following presentation is called "Emerging Issues in Workers Compensation: Insurance & The Returning Veteran, Limited English & Workplace Injuries, First Responders & Occupational Risk". It was presented by Dr. Robert P. Hartwig on August 14, 2006.
