To avoid this problem the Insurance Information Institute now offers free, downloadable personal finance software called My Financial House. The program is on the I.I.I.'s Web site at http://www.iii.org .

The program is on the I.I.I.'s Web site at http://www.iii.org . Users download the software onto their own computer; the I.I.I. does not store personal information. The software provides easy-to-use tools to help consumers organize, create a picture of their current financial situation, work more efficiently with financial advisers, identify gaps in their fiancial circumstances and guide heirs and beneficiaries when filing claims.
