This is Carolyn Gorman, Vice President at the Insurance Information Institute. What follows is are two actualities on planning to evacuate your home during a natural disaster.

With preparation and practice, families stand the best chance of getting out with what they need, and ending up in the right place. The key is to plan ahead so your evacuation will be smooth and fast.

Arrange your evacuation ahead of time. Identify where you will go and which route to take. Ask an out of town friend or family member to act as a contact person in case your family is separated for some reason. Take along medicines, important financial documents, insurance policies, a home inventory and important contact information such as your insurance agent or company.
