This is Carolyn Gorman, Vice President at the Insurance Information Institute. What follows are two actualities on protecting your pet during a natural disaster.

  1. Most public shelters exclude pets, that’s why it’s essential that you plan ahead, so that if you must evacuate you won’t be forced to leave your pet behind.

  2. Be prepared to leave early, don’t wait for an official evacuation, you might be ordered to leave your pets behind. Keep your pets on leashes or in carriers at all times, and make sure your pet has up to date identification including a phone number when you can be reached.
