Webinar. 01/21/2010. 58 slides.  This Webinar, held by Munich Re and the Insurance Information Institute on January 21, includes an audio discussion accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation.  Participants included Carl Hedde, head of Risk Accumulation, Munich Reinsurance America, who presented a U.S. natural catastrophe update; Angelika Wirtz, head of Risk Accumulation, Munich Reinsurance America, who presented a global catastrophe update; and Robert Hartwig, president of the insurance Information Institute, whose presentation focused on financing catastrophic losses in the midst of a financial catastrophe.  Hedde noted that insured losses in the U.S. in 2009 totaled $11.1 billion, much lower than the 1999 to 2008 average loss of $24.5 billion (in 2009 dollars).  Wirtz noted that worldwide there were 850 natural catastrophes in 2009, with overall losses of $50 billion and insured losses of $22 billion.  Hartwig’s presentation includes sections on insurers’ financial strength and ratings, capital/policyholders’ surplus and terrorism.
