This PowerPoint report, presented by Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, focuses on challenges and opportunities that face the property/casualty (P/C) insurance industry as the U.S. recovers from the “Great Recession." A section outlines reasons for optimism, including exposure growth that began in the second half of 2010 and is expected to accelerate in 2011 for commercial insurance and auto insurance. Causes for concern include lines of insurance that are lagging, including commercial property and homeowners. Nevertheless the P/C insurance industry is expected to see growth in 2011 for the first time since 2006. Other sections review premium growth, capital and capacity, financial strength, underwriting performance, investment and catastrophe loss trends as well as the continued evolution of distribution channels. The report provides a regulatory and legislative overview and a look at the impact of financial services reform on the P/C insurance industry. It concludes with a discussion of the leading challenges facing the P/C insurance industry from 2011 to 2015.
