This Webinar update, prepared by Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute for the Intermediaries and Reinsurance Underwriters Association, provides an analysis of disaster losses for the first quarter 2010. The presentation notes that catastrophe losses were among the highest on record for the first quarter, totaling at least $7.755 billion. Economic losses totaled at least $35.66, and more than 223,000 people were killed in these events. The report focuses on the unusual catastrophe activity in April 2010, including the Icelandic volcano and the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico and subsequent oil spill. Sections offer a historical review of U.S. catastrophe losses, industry capital and financial strength and an insurance industry financial overview.
