This PowerPoint report, presented by Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, at the Professional Insurance Association of Ohio Agency Management & Profitability Conference, analyzes the state of the property/casualty (P/C) insurance industry. The report highlights reasons for optimism and causes for concern, noting that that the economic recovery in U.S. is self-sustaining and there will be no double dip recession. Although pessimism persists and financial market volatility will remain a reality, the era of mass P/C insurance exposure destruction has ended. However, restoring the destroyed exposure will take three or more years in the U.S. The P/C insurance industry will see growth in 2011 for the first time since 2006. The presentation includes many statistics on the Ohio market and updated P/C insurance industry data for the U.S. through first-half 2010 as well as the latest available economic data. Sections focus on profitability, premium growth, capital and capacity, underwriting performance in commercial and personal lines. Other sections include a financial/investment review, a financial strength overview and a discussion of financial services reform and its impacts on the insurance industry.
