SPONSORED BY

On July 9 Munich Re and the Insurance Information Institute jointly presented an overview of natural catastrophe activity for the first half of 2013. The agenda included an update on U.S. and world catastrophes by Carl Hedde, Senior Vice President and Head of Risk Accumulation at Munich Re America; a discussion of the economic implication of natural catastrophe losses by Robert Hartwig, President and Economist of the Insurance Information Institute; and an analysis of convective storms and floods by Dr. Peter Höppe, head of the Geo Risks Research/Corporate Climate Centre at Munich Re. Numerous charts and graphs provide data on natural catastrophes from 1980 to the first half of 2013. Economic losses from natural catastrophes, including floods, earthquakes, thunderstorm events and heat waves caused $45 billion in losses in the first half of 2013, far below the 10-year average of $85 billion, according to Munich Re. It puts insured losses worldwide at about $13 billion for the first half of 2013.

Dr. Hartwig's presentation is available below. A full recording of the webinar is available on the Munich Re website.
