NEW YORK, February 6, 2014 — Reporters interested in interviewing Dr. Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) and an economist, about the insurance repercussions of tornadoes can do in advance of his presentation early next week at the National Tornado Summit.

Dr. Hartwig will address the National Tornado Summit (February 10-11, 2014) on its second and final day at the Cox Convention Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Reporters wishing to speak with Dr. Hartwig should contact Michael Barry, vice president, Media Relations, I.I.I., at 212-346-5542 or michaelb@iii.org.

Dr. Hartwig’s February 11 presentation, Tornadoes and Severe Convective Events: Insurance Trends and Challenges in an Era of Climate Volatility, comes months after deadly and devastating tornadoes swept through communities such as Moore, Oklahoma (May 2013) and Washington, Illinois (November 2013).

“Munich Re determined that severe thunderstorms, including tornado events, caused 110 fatalities and led to $10.3 billion in insurance claims payouts in the United States in 2013,” Dr. Hartwig stated.

Credentialed members of the media covering the Tornado Summit will have access to an on-site press room at the Convention Center. More details can be obtained from Ms. Kelly Collins, the event’s media coordinator, at 405-522-0683 or kelly.collins@oid.ok.gov.
