NEW YORK, May 22, 2014 — Reporters covering the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) news conference today on the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season can contact the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) for insights on severe weather events and insurance.

Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, NOAA’s administrator, will deliver NOAA’s initial outlook for the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season as part of a Thursday, May 22, news conference. It gets underway at 11 a.m., ET, and will be held at the New York City Office of Emergency Management’s Emergency Operations Center, 165 Cadman Plaza East, Brooklyn, NY. The six-month hurricane season officially begins on Sunday, June 1.

Wind damage from both tropical storms and hurricanes is covered under standard homeowners, renters and business insurance policies. Flood damage resulting from storm surge caused by hurricanes, is excluded under standard policies; however flood coverage is available from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and from a few private insurance companies.

Damage to cars from hurricanes is covered under the optional comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy. This includes wind damage, flooding and even falling objects such as tree limbs. More than 75 percent of all Americans choose to purchase comprehensive auto coverage.

Michael Barry, vice president, Media Relations, at the I.I.I. will be attending the NOAA news conference and can discuss the economic effects of hurricanes as well as consumer-related insurance information. He can be reached at michaelb@iii.org or 917-923-8245.
