NEW YORK, July 16, 2013 — Peak hurricane season is less than a month away, and is predicted to be severe. The time for home and business owners to create their disaster plan and make sure they have the right type and amount of coverage is now, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

On Tuesday, July 23, the I.I.I. will conduct a satellite media tour with subject matter experts offering advice on how to prepare for hurricanes and other disasters. Topics for discussion include:

  • The four things every home or business owner should do to prepare for the worst.
  • Lessons learned from superstorm Sandy.
  • How to calculate how much insurance coverage you need.
  • How to buy flood insurance, and when it is necessary. (There is a 30-day waiting period for flood insurance to go into effect, so if you need it, don’t delay.)
  • Conditions that can trigger your hurricane deductible; guidance about the specific hurricane deductibles in your area.
  • The financial strength of the insurance industry, which is well prepared to pay claims despite the costly natural disasters of the past few years.
  • The role that insurers play as “economic first responders” in the aftermath of disasters.
  • New, free apps available from I.I.I. to help consumers prepare (home inventory, disaster planning and understanding homeowners and renters coverage).

Interview slots are available with I.I.I. president and economist, Dr. Robert Hartwig and Jeanne Salvatore, the I.I.I.’s consumer spokesperson. Spanish language interviews are also available with the I.I.I.’s Hispanic Spokesperson, Elianne González.

If your area is not prone to hurricanes, the interview can be tailored to discuss other natural disasters such as fires, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc.

To book an interview with an I.I.I. spokesperson during the Satellite Media Tour on Tuesday, July 23, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. EST, contact Lana Jung at Synaptic Digital’s Media Relations Department at 212-812-7132 (lana.jung@synapticdigital.com).

To speak to an I.I.I. spokesperson about other matters, please call 212-346-5500 and ask to be directed to the media department.
