Academic Membership

The mission of the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) is to build public understanding of insurance—what it does and how it works—among all stakeholders involved in this vital industry. As part of this mission, the I.I.I. offers dues-free membership to the academic community.  If you are a professor, researcher, department head, director or dean of a college, university, or other academic institution that offers coursework on insurance, risk management, actuarial science or related fields, we invite you to apply for membership for your institution and its students.

Academic Membership Benefits

Academic Membership gives educators and students’ password protected access to key resources, including:

  • Members Area of the I.I.I. Website. This includes online access to the I.I.I.’s Insurance Fact Book. Hailed as the “almanac of the insurance industry,” the Fact Book delivers at-a-glance access to thousands of statistics, tables and graphs covering a range of vital topics, including factors affecting costs, losses by category, laws affecting motorists, premiums by line and many others. The online membership exclusive version is updated continuously and provides customization tools that enable researchers to sort data by state and create special pdf editions based on selected criteria.
  • The I.I.I. Information Center. The Information Center provides research support through an extensive collection of online and print resources, as well as on-call professional experts to respond to research queries. (Academic membership includes two complimentary Information Center research requests per month related to an academic project.)
  • Complimentary Copy of Impact magazine (Available upon request). This semi-annual print publication focuses on the insurance industry’s charitable initiatives and contributions to community development.
  • Member Pricing for I.I.I. Publications. This includes the Insurance Handbook, a guide to the insurance industry that provides concise explanations of auto, home, life, disability and business insurance; as well as issues papers, presentations, videos and more.

How to Apply

Educators can apply for academic membership for their institution by emailing  Once the application has been approved for an institution, all its attendees may register as Academic Members on the I.I.I. website.
