NEW YORK, September 1, 2016 — Reporters working on stories about the 15-year anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks can contact the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) for information, analysis and interviews on the insurance ramifications of the tragedy, including the Terrorism Risk and Insurance Act (TRIA).

 

Total insured losses from the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania, totaled approximately $43.6 billion (in 2015 dollars), including property, life and liability insurance claim costs. It is the second costliest insurance event in U.S. history, second only to Hurricane Katrina. A total of 2,976 people perished in the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, excluding the 19 hijackers.
