This presentation by Robert Hartwig, the Institute’s Chief Economist, provides detailed information on the latest p/c insurance industry financial statistics with estimates for year-end 2006 profit, premium, underwriting and investment performance. 2006 will produce the highest industrywide return on equity (ROE) since 1988 and lowest combined ratio since 1955, though total investment gains will still likely fall short of the records set in the late 1990s. Profitability comparisons for key lines in Massachusetts versus the US and nearby states are provided.
