Carolyn Gorman, spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute:

  • "Keep your gutters clean. Remove leaves and other debris that can clog the system so that melting snow and ice can flow freely. This can prevent ice damming which is when water is unable to properly drain through the gutters and instead seeps into the house causing water to drip from the ceilings and walls."

  • "You might want to consider installing gutter guards. They're available from most hardware stores. Gutter guards are screens that prevent debris from enterring the gutter and interfearing with the flow of water away from the house."

  • "Learn how to winterize your outdoor faucets. It's a simple process that can save you and your insurance company thousands of dollars. Know where the main water shut-off valve is in your home. The quicker you can shut off the water or direct your plumber to the problem, the better chance you have of preventing expensive property damage."
