This PowerPoint report by Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, presented at the St. Louis CPCU All Industry Day conference, provides a comprehensive overview and outlook for the property/casualty (P/C) insurance industry, with an emphasis on the Missouri market. The report includes a discussion of reasons for optimism and causes for concern in the P/C insurance industry. A section provides a P/C profitability overview, which contains a line by line analysis of profitability trends in the Missouri and nearby states’ P/C insurance markets. Slides show information on the percentage of homeowners with earthquake coverage in Missouri and the increase in the cost of that coverage in recent years. Other sections look at pricing, underwriting, investment and expense trends; merger and acquisition activity; and external factors influencing profitability. A review of the tort system discusses causes for concern. Sections on inflation and growth in the aftermath of the Great Recession as well as a look at global issues impacting P/C insurance and a catastrophe loss review conclude the presentation.
