NEW YORK, December 10, 2014 — With a wintry mix of rain, snow, sleet and high winds affecting much of the East Coast, reporters with questions about insurance coverage can contact the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

The I.I.I. can provide consumer tips as well as facts and statistics on damage related to the winter storm, which the Weather Channel is referring to as “Damon.”

Severe winter weather is the third-largest cause of insured catastrophe losses after hurricanes and tornadoes, according to the I.I.I. Losses from snow, ice, freezing and related causes averaged $1.2 billion annually over the past twenty years.

A standard homeowners policy provides coverage for damage caused by wind, snow, severe cold and freezing rain. Flood damage is not covered by standard home or renters insurance policies, but is available from FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program and a few private insurers.

Car accidents caused by slippery road conditions are covered under a standard auto insurance policy. There is also coverage for damage to the vehicle caused by fallen trees or ice.

Information on how to prepare your home against winter-related damage can be found at the Institute for Business & Home Safety.
