NEW YORK, November 19, 2013 — Reporters covering today’s U.S. House hearing on driverless cars, and seeking additional insights on the insurance repercussions of this technology, can contact the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) for subject matter experts and analysis.

The U.S. House of Representatives’ subcommittee on Highways and Transit is convening on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at 10 a.m., in 2167 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, D.C. to discuss “How Autonomous Vehicles Will Shape the Future of Surface Transportation.”

Autonomous vehicles are “capable of navigating the road without human input by sensing their environment through electronic sensors and computer software algorithms,” the U.S. House subcommittee’s hearing notice stated.

“The cost of auto insurance is built around two things—the frequency of auto accidents, and their expense,” said Dr. Robert Hartwig, president of the I.I.I. and an economist. “If self-driving cars become more of a reality on our roads, it is going to have a major impact on auto insurance.”
