Recovering from a tornado

SPONSORED BY

Protecting yourself and your family

  • Keep calm and remain in your shelter until the storm has passed.
  • Check people around you for injuries. Begin first aid or seek help if necessary.
  • Avoid entering heavily damaged buildings until authorities say they are safe.
  • When you go outside, stay far away from downed power lines and report them to local authorities.

Protecting your property

  • Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage from rain, wind or looting. Most insurance policies reimburse these emergency repair costs, so keep all receipts.
  • Keep receipts for additional living expenses such as temporary housing or meals if your home is uninhabitable.
  • Make a detailed list of all damaged or destroyed personal property. Do not discard damaged items until you have met with an insurance adjuster unless they pose a safety risk.
  • Check utility lines and appliances for damage. If you smell gas, open windows and turn off the main gas valve. Do not turn on lights or appliances until the gas has dissipated.
  • If you see damaged electrical wiring or sparks, turn off the power at the main breaker if it is safe to do so.
  • Use flashlights rather than candles to reduce the risk of fire.
  • Do not be rushed into signing repair contracts. Work with reputable contractors and check references. Be cautious of contractors who go door-to-door offering quick repairs after a disaster. If you are unsure about a contractor's credentials, contact your claims adjuster, the Better Business Bureau, or your local Chamber of Commerce.
  • Make sure the contractor you hire is experienced in repair work, not just new construction, and understand payment terms before signing any contracts.
  • Notify your insurance agent or insurance company as soon as possible to begin the claims process. If you have vacated the premises, make sure your representative knows where and how to contact you.
