How to Live to Be 100: In the Property/Casualty Insurance Industry

This PowerPoint presentation, by Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, reviews the factors that contribute to longevity in the business world in general and the property/casualty insurance sector in particular.  The report focuses on the life cycle of businesses, drawing parallels between longevity in the business and natural worlds; historical lessons that explain what types of businesses exist live for hundreds of years and why; the characteristics of the world’s oldest businesses; which insurance companies have survived for a hundred or more years and why; and why some insurers fail.  The presentation concludes with a list of lessons to be learned from the current financial crisis, including the importance of risk management, avoiding getting involved in business areas that are not fully understood, the risk of too rapid growth and others.
