Privacy is an issue that is never far form the minds of most Americans. The rise of the Internet, concern over information contained in medical records, convergence in the financial services industry and genetic testing are fueling the privacy debate. The federal government and many states have adopted legislation designed to place limits on how businesses use and share customer (and sometimes employee) information. There are profound implications for banks, insurers, employers and all other organizations that rely on such information to make day-to-day business decisions.
