NEW YORK, March 23, 2015 — Reporters covering the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) conference in Nashville this week will have an on-site resource for information on lightning and insurance. The Insurance Information Institute’s (I.I.I.) chief communications officer, Jeanne M. Salvatore will be available to conduct media interviews

 

The LPI/ULPA 2015 Annual Conference runs Tuesday, March 24 through Saturday, March 28, at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center. The full meeting agenda can be found at the LPI website.

Damage by lightning is covered under standard homeowners and business insurance policies, as well as the comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy. Lightning strikes cost about $674 million in homeowners insurance losses in 2013, down 30.5 percent from 2012, according to the I.I.I.

 

The I.I.I. estimated the average lightning claim at $5,869 in 2013, down 8.3 percent from 2012. Georgia had the largest number of homeowner insurance claims for lighting losses in 2013, followed by Texas and North Carolina, according to the I.I.I.
