NEW YORK, December 15, 2015 —For millions of Americans their home is their biggest investment, yet understanding how to protect it remains a challenge for many consumers, according to the Insurance Information Institute’s (I.I.I.) new report, PulsePoints: Home and Auto Insurance.

The report covers a range of insurance related topics—from earthquake and flood insurance to telematics and driverless vehicles. It provides key insights to consumer views in a clear and engaging format, according to Dr. Robert Hartwig, president and economist, I.I.I.

“Our mission is to help people understand what insurance is and how it works,” Hartwig said. “We hope that sharing our survey results will help enhance consumer understanding of the crucial role that insurance plays in financially protecting them against a wide range of disasters.”

The survey results in PulsePoints: Home and Auto reveal that many consumers still do not understand that flood coverage is not included in their homeowners insurance policy and that many are confused about the different types of deductibles.

The survey also asked about issues related to automobile insurance. It found that many consumers are open to new automotive technologies, such as telematics, that track driving behavior. Interestingly, a majority of survey respondents said that they would not set foot in a self-driving car.

Results were gleaned from the I.I.I.’s annual Pulse Survey, an industry poll that has been conducted since 1997. By publishing key findings from the survey, the I.I.I. aims to both answer questions and stimulate discussions about insurance amongst consumers, the media, educators and insurers with the goal of closing the information gap.

The full report can be downloaded at PulsePoints: Home and Auto Insurance.
